The top two parenting styles on the Channel Nine series have been chosen, including one controversial mum and dad who have inspired the expert on the show.

The top two parenting styles on Parental Guidance have been chosen.

Parenting expert and dad-of-six Justin Coulson and TODAY host Allison Langdon have selected Tiger and Free-range parents to progress through to the finale.

The winning couples were decided after four sets of parents, Routine, Strict, Tiger and Free-range, all moved in together and each spent a day in charge of the 12 children.

Justin and Ally surprised by winning couples

On Monday night’s episode it is the Strict and Routine parents’ turn to be in charge of the house.

Strict parents Andrew and Miriam put on a barbecue and a water fight which all of the children loved.

Next it is the Routine parents Brett and Tony who organise a dream birthday party fit with ponies and a chaotic cake fight.

Later in the episode hosts Justin and Ally review the remaining four parents before deciding who should progress to the final challenge.

In the end they decide Tiger and Free-range as the best parenting styles.

Of the Tiger parents, Ally says it surprised her how much joy and laughter they have, and she loves how important it is for them to push the children to perform to the best of their ability in a talent show they had to organise.

Justin likes that the Free-range parents don’t have a complete disregard of rules and it isn’t total permissiveness which he expected, but rather clear values just with less rules.

Ally finds it interesting that a lot of the parents in the house were trying to adopt “a little free-range here and there”.

Three things that make a parent great

Justin reveals to the group that there are three things that make a great parent.

“Number one love and warmth, limited boundaries and three autonomy,” he says.

It is that last point that helps push Free-range parents Penny and Daniel through to the final round.

“Most of the time parents will focus on love and limits,” he tells the group.

“The first set of parents we choose to send through to the final challenge they put on a great event and they taught us that giving autonomy helps you to get remarkable results.”

“A lot of the time parents say no to children not because the children are doing anything wrong but because they’re doing things that are inconvenient,” he says.

“What I love with what Penny and Daniel are doing as Free-rangers is they’re saying we’re not so bothered whether it’s convenient or not, this is about the children having fun experiences.”

Penny and Daniel are thrilled.

“That really means a lot, there is no more important role to us than parenting our children, being recognised as doing a good job, it really means a lot to us,” she says.

Justin adds that he has been inspired by the family.

“You have done a great job, I felt like I’ve got my parenting dialled in pretty well, but when I get together with my family I can see myself just easing off the pedal, just relaxing a little bit and I’ve got a feeling it’s going to make a really big difference in my home,” he says.

Ally says the second parents through to the final â€" Tiger parents Debbie and Kevin â€" surprised her.

“They changed my perception of this particular parenting style, what I’ve learnt from them, is when delivered with love and warmth it can be effective,” she says.

Two couples go on wilderness challenge

Routine parents Brett and Tony admit their top two picks from the start of filming were Debbie and Kevin and Penny and Daniel.

Strict dad Andrew also thought the couples were deserving.

“These families are really deserving of going, they’ve done a fantastic job and their children are evidence of their parenting styles.”

The finale episode will see Penny and Daniel and Kevin and Debbie camp with their families for 48 hours in a wilderness challenge.

After, All 10 sets of parents plus Ally and Dr Justin reunite in to review the final journey and vote on whose parenting style has proved to be the best.
