FREE KISKA
Re “Call for Marineland to free last surviving orca after ‘heartbreaking’ video surfaces” (Denette Wilford, July 21): Sentience for all living animals is being recognized around the world by caring people who recognize that animals are aware and find value in their own subjective experience. Animals require what all sentient beings require for their survival and to thrive in their life. We all need space, autonomy, play, freedom of expression, relief from boredom, love â€" we need to experience life from without ourselves as well as within … we all require safety, security, as well as a sense of belonging. We require the ability to express our own specific natural nature. It is cruel to keep animals like Kiska alone and isolated from her family and friends. It would be wonderful to see her released to a notable and safe sanctuary where she can develop herself free from confinement and abuse.

(We believe it will only be a matter of time before she is released. It is past time for that to happen)

IRISH EYES
I want to submit St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, as a national paid holiday out of respect for all my Irish Catholic immigrant ancestors. These relatives made massive contributions to Canada and provided labour and expertise to the building of our country. Without the low-priced oppressed labour of the immigrant Irish after the potato famine in Ireland none of the beautiful stone buildings and roads would not have been possible. Irish ancestors provided police officers, military personnel, politicians, teachers, doctors, and nurses throughout the history of this country. The role of this culture as builders throughout history deserves recognition and respect.

(Nice sentiment, but good luck getting anyone in a position of authority to agree in this climate)

KINSELLA VS NON VAXXED
Re “My disdain for the idiotically unvaccinated is by no means unique” (Warren Kinsella, Aug. 7): Kinsella really dumps all his dishes with this column, huffing mightily to underscore how that very selfish minority, those with the temerity to refuse to get along by agreeing to a COVID-19 vaccine, entitles them to their richly deserved pariah status. After I put the newspaper down, I confess I was relieved to see that Kinsella had not taken a page out of history. He managed to contain his outrage and fell short of demanding those same loutish, selfish unvaccinated holdouts be formally shamed by being compelled to sport some kind of foreboding designation, an identifying badge, like a white feather or pink triangle or a yellow star, say, on their person. So that others â€" the vaccinated, in this case â€" would be alerted to the potential risk they run by affiliating with this pariah class. Because, as Kinsella so uncompromisingly puts it, “(W)e sure as hell don’t want to rub elbows with you anymore.”

(He speaks for many with the sentiments he expressed, but recognizes forced vaccination is still not going to work)
